REPORT BY SUZ WEST:
First league race of the season run at Newboyld Common Leamington Spa provided everything a cross country race should offer mud , hills , a ditch and an eager team teal spirit.
The race proved technical and enjoyable all at the same time the last 48 hours of rain had made the course particularly slippery in places. There were some strong performances with Nicola Sykes , Katie Young and Linda Howell scoring to put us in a 11th place overall. Katies debut at cross country was a great start and she has informed me she is signing up for more.
There were impressive performances from Julie Delahaye Slater who has made an impressive come back after injury. Masters scorers’ were Linda Howell , Marianne Hensman and Sarah Rock. Putting us also in an excellent position in the masters table.
Monica Baptista also ran her first cross country league race and really entered into the team spirit and even saying the ditch was wicked! Not sure that’s my choice of words but it is fun. The course was two laps so this includes the ditch twice and the mound a steep hill or im sure Jude pointed out to me it is a beacon. Overall BvH ladies all put in great runs and enjoyed the event. The good thing about the ladies race it gave us the opportunity to support the men around the course. They had done a marvellous job of supporting us along with other supporters who included friends and family of our runners and some of our runners who couldn’t run. This just shows the team spirit of Bournville on and off the course. Well Done Everyone.

It`s early days yet,and there is plenty of time/opportunities for the Bournville Harriers efforts/endeavours to be even more successful in the Cross Country League Races which lie ahead.
The Ladies have made a splendid start to their XC Campaign, and BvH men have made a steady/solid start to their XC Season. If `we` work hard and prepare well, and continue to support and encourage oneanother we may well cause a few surprises. The turnout in Leamington Spa was most encouraging.
If you havn`t run XC,give it a go.”Show them what you are made of —– Put the Great back in Britain!”
Marvellous turnout, the men’s and ladies teams plus the numerous supporters sprinkled around the course, made for a large BvH contingent.
League cross country is a great team event, the important thing to remember being that everyone running potentially contributes to the team result through the points scoring system.
A number of debutants raced yesterday and I’m sure they would recommend to all that running cross country will add to their running performance.
Its not too late for anyone considering joining us at the next league race to do so; you don’t have to be fast….just look at me!
Well done everybody on such a great effort! The ladies already appear to be well placed. The season was always going to be a tough one for the men, but we’re not too far adrift and can still catch the four teams ahead of us once people are a bit more race fit and when we get full strength squad out. Interesting that so many clubs failed to register a B team, including Birchfield.
