Remembering Joe Lewis (update – date for park bench dedication)

In the months since our friend and coach Joe Lewis passed away, Bournville Harriers has arranged jointly with Joe’s family to have a park bench installed in Cofton Park in his memory. The bench has been funded by the club, but members (and others) who wish to make a contribution to the cost will soon have the opportunity to do so.

The bench will be dedicated immediately following the first XC practice of the season on 8 September. Friends of Joe who wish to come along to the dedication but not to the session should plan to arrive around 10am. Our immense gratitude goes to club member Dean Parker, who has done a lot of work to make this happen.

  1. I came across this site having seen one of your club members at the Wolverhampton Marathon and I wondered if Rowheath Harriers was still going, as I had been a member many years ago.

I met Joe in the mid-70’s at an aikido club in West Heath and well remember his kind and helpful nature. He had a 2CV at the time and his enthusiasm for the car helped me get one some time later. I visited his house in Norman Road and he was very pleased for me when I joined the police and went on to represent them in athletics.

It was very sad to see the news and I wanted to post this as my own tribute, but also to show how many people Joe had a positive impact on in his life.

A lovely idea for the bench.

  2. What a lovely thought. Well done Dean and everyone else involved.

  3. Thank you to Dean and everyone else who made this happen. A great tribute to Joe.
