Welsh Masters Open Indoor Championships2011

Barrie Roberts reports: Last weekend I travelled down to Cardiff to compete in the Welsh Masters AA Indoor Championships. Apart from being tired and fighting off a mild URI, I was keen to run in my first indoor competition.

My preparation for the Championships was virtually non-existent but I wanted to have the experience of competing indoors – at worst I could regard it as training session! As well wanting to improve my performances over time, I also want to avoid injury so I chose to run in flats on this occasion and not spikes, which arguably give better grip.

The only two track distances on offer were the 400m and 1500m, and so those were the races which I had entered. The Results were as follows:-

400M @ 1.30pm Race 2 of 5

4th | Barrie Roberts M65 | Bournville Harriers | 78.39 | (Gold Medal)

1500M @ 3.00pm Race 1 of 2

10th | Barrie Roberts | M65 |Bournville Harriers | 6:16.53 | (Gold Medal)

I enjoyed the experience of competing in such good company and in such a good indoor facility. Racing around a 200m track and coping with the steep banking on the bends and the ‘dry’ air environment is quite a contrast to being out of doors.

I look forward to the second half of the WMAA Championships (Indoors) due to be held on 5th March 2011.
