Barrie Roberts reports: My wife Katie and myself left our Harborne home at 3pm last Wednesday afternoon and headed for Aberdare, S Wales.
We stopped at Monmouth for a pot of tea and some Welsh cakes. We reached our destination, the Sobell Sports Stadium in Aberdare (off the Heads of the Valleys Road just past Merthyr) by 5.45pm. The weather was warm and sunny, and the scenery was quite stunning, a near perfect backdrop/location for an evening track and field meeting.
I competed in the 3000m track race at 7pm and came 21st out of 24. I was wearing a new pair of lightweight road runners as the track appeared to be dry. I had run in them a couple of days earlier and they were very comfortable. I had never run under 13mins for 3000m prior to this particular race and was therefore pleased to run a PB; albeit with some useful pacemaking from my fellow WMAA runners, including Pat Gallagher who, subject to BMAF ratification set a new British Record for Age 65-69.
My time was recorded as 12:41.6 As well as a PB it is now a new BvH Age Category Record. I hope to improve on it next year!
