Turkey Trot 5 mile race – 30 Jan 2011

Andrew Halliday reports: Sunday 30 January 2011 saw the running of Wolverhampton & Bilston AC’s re-scheduled “Turkey Trot” 5 mile race.

This is a road race, but starts and finishes around the Athletics track at Aldersley Leisure Village. There is a 1 mile uphill drag at miles 3 to 4, but other than that it’s a pretty good course.

I decided to race on the morning of the race. Mainly for two reasons 1) it is a road race, and 2) for the second race in succession I am what I would call “fully fit”! When these two reasons collide I have to make hay …

The race started off pretty quick, being led by Gareth Briggs (Staffs Moorlands) and Paul Rogers (Tipton) for the first 3 miles. I spent most of that just hanging on in there, but “hanging on”, even when all you want to do is slow down, is an important racing quality. Rogers fell away on the uphill section, and I tucked behind Briggs until we entered the Athletics Stadium. No matter how good or bad I feel, I know I can always sprint finish, and so with 250m I put the boosters on and managed to win the race.

I was very pleased with my time of 26min 58sec and shows that the cross-country racing is helping me on the beloved tarmac.
